Literary Field Guide

Swanstrom, Lisa.  “A Field Guide to Artificial Nature.” Journal of New Frontiers in Spatial Concepts (2018).

This essay is about “The Literary Field Guide,” my web application for creating online, on-the-fly brochures for literary spaces.  The essay came about from of my involvement with the “Ideal Spaces” working group’s symposium at the Venice Art Biennale in 2018.  The application is available online and is part of a larger project that attempts to reframe conversations about literature, ecology, and literary ecologies in a playful manner.

Here is an excerpt from the app:

As a teaching tool, the Field Guide attempts to create a site and sense of engagement between the viewer and a complex literary ecology. As a provocation, the Field Guide creates data visualizations of literary landscapes in hopes of calling attention to the artificial and constructed natures of all such visualizations.
